The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, usually referred to as simply the Freedmen's Bureau, was a U.S. federal government agency that aided distressed freedmen (freed slaves) in 1865–1869, during the Reconstruction era of the United States. George T. Bassett served as a volunteer officer in the United States Subsistence Dept. for the Sub-District of Appomattox, Va., and as Chief Commissioner of Subsistence for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands in Charleston, S.C. Bassett received a commission as a captain on Mar. 11, 1865 in the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers in Washington.
